The Regional Center for Pediatric Diabetes of Verona is the Reference Center for pediatric diabetes in the Veneto Region and one of the largest centers nationwide in Italy. The Center is fully dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes in children and adolescents.The Regional Center for Pediatric Diabetes is located in the “Mother and Child” Hospital at the University Hospital of Verona, is a new and modern structure opened in 2017, that brings under one roof all the specialists in the pediatric and obstetric/gynecological field.
The Chief of the Regional Center for Pediatric Diabetes is Prof. Claudio Maffeis, full professor of Pediatrics and current President of the ISPED (Italian Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology). The multidisciplinary team of the Regional Center for Pediatric Diabetes is composed by 5 MD (4 pediatricians and 1 endocrinologist), an associate Professor of Pediatrics, a Ph.D. student, 4 registered nurses, 2 registered dieticians and 2 psychologists.
One of the main targets of the Regional Center for Pediatric Diabetes and of the multidisciplinary team is therapeutic patient education that is considered a central element of the management of diabetes. This is done also by organizing every year several diabetes camps for children and adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes divided accordingly to their age.
Another huge effort is directed to the massive use of the latest technologies in the field of treatment and managing diabetes in particular the use of insulin pumps (CSII) and continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGM). For all these technologies the Regional Center for Pediatric Diabetes of Verona is also the Reference Center for the Veneto Region.
